History of Animal Health Librarianship

Veterinary medical librarianship became a recognized specialty in the U.S. and Canada in the late 1960's, and early 1970's with the 1973 publication of Kerker and Murphy's award-winning, Comparative and Veterinary Medicine: A Guide to the Resource Literature (1973), winner of the 1975 Oberly Award for Bibliography in the Natural or Agricultural Sciences ,and the subsequent formation of the Veterinary Medical Libraries Section of the Medical Library Association. In the early 1960's, the first US regional primate center and its library were established at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center in Beaverton, Oregon (McDonald, 1983). Although the first zoo and aquarium libraries began with the advent of the modern zoological park in the 19th century, few had libraries prior to 1960. The publication of bibliographies for the core literature in the 1970's and 1980's and the formations of Libraries Interest Group of the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AAZPA), helped foster the profession (Kissling, 1988). Later, the 1st International Conference of Animal Health Information Specialists (1992) and its offshoots spurred a new growth in the literature in these fields, with much of it produced as grey literature, elusive and difficult to locate.

Scope

The purpose of this bibliography is to bring together references from multiple disciplines to create an international, comprehensive database of animal health librarianship-related works and/or writings of animal health librarians. It is meant to provide historical perspective as well as guidance for current and future practice. It supports the demand for evidence based practice and the role of librarians in the global One Health initiative. There are over 350 libraries worldwide serving veterinary and agriculture schools, zoos, primate centers, aquariums, animal health product manufacturers, and government agencies. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the fields of animal health and librarianship and the variety of sources in which articles are published, this was a challenging endeavor. References were gathered from the fields of agriculture, veterinary sciences, zoological sciences, medicine, and library and information science. Likewise, papers that have been presented at a wide variety of conferences and meetings were included. A special effort has been made to include grey literature in this bibliography. Currently 17-18% of the references are from conference papers and proceedings, with an additional 17-18% from other forms of grey literature. References to other materials often not included in conventional indexes include book chapters and news items. Recent additions are increasingly web-based, including library guides, blogs, and online presentations.

Standards

This bibliography uses the International Standards Organization definition of "document" as "any item, printed or otherwise, which is amenable to cataloging or indexing" (ISO 5963 - 3.1, 1985). Links to full-text are provided when available (IFLA Guidelines for Subject Access in National Bibliographies, 2011). Multiple means of access are provided in accordance with RUSA Guidelines for the Preparation of a Bibliography (RUSA, 4.13) as well as "multiple indexes" in the form of drop down menus (RUSA, 4.252).

Sources

References to these journal articles, books, conference papers, web sites, etc. have been compiled from sources such as indexes, databases, and the internet. Primary sources include references from indexes and databases such as:

The following organizations provide references through listservs, web-based historical collections, oral histories, and conference repositories:

Colleagues were contacted and asked to check their personal files for articles, and entries were gathered from several existing bibliographies. Jill Crawley-Low's web bibliography (U. of Saskatchewan)was a very useful resource, as was the bibliography from the Pelzer/Wiese (Iowa State Univ.) online publication Veterinary medical libraries in the 21st century.

Other colleagues provided valuable source materials and collaboration on subject headings, as well as editorial advice and assistance, including Trenton Boyd (University of Missouri) and Susanne Whitaker (Cornell).

History of the AHLLL Bibliography

The original 2009 version of this bibliography was compiled in EndNote and presented on the WSU Research Exchange as a PDF document. The current bibliography interface was published in 2012 and includes the original 900 entries migrated to refbase from EndNote, with the edition of 400+ more entries. This new platform allows for continuous updating and the tracking of updates by stakeholders via RSS. Software selection was made with the help of the following WSU Libraries’ faculty and staff: Alex Merrill, Access Services & Systems Operation Manager, Kay Vyhnanek, Scholarly Communications Librarian, and Doug Lambeth, Digital Collections Products Production Coordinator. Implementation and customization of this web-based platform could not have been accomplished without the expertise of Cindy Ellis, WSU Libraries’ IT Specialist.

Explanation of Use

Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the field and the broad scope of this resource, synonymous topics may not collocate using reference management software. To accommodate for document attributes important to users and the lack of thesaurus cross-referencing, several fields have been added and indexed for subject, geographic location, document type (bibliography, directory, library guide, etc.), animal type, institutional affiliation and library type. Drop down menus facilitate controlled vocabulary searching. Not all fields have been populated. This is intentional in many cases as they may not reflect the main use of that document in this context.

An accompanying indexing thesaurus is attached to facilitate the tracking of lead-in terms to their appropriate subject heading. Users may also find it helpful to search using the keyword box in the upper right corner.

In addition to inclusion of standard bibliographic information, a concerted effort has been made to include DOI's, PMID's, and URL's that will link to content freely available on the internet, and to facilitate identification and location of other items, OCLC and ISBN numbers are included, as needed.

We welcome feedback and comments on the bibliography, as well as suggestions for new entries. In the meantime, we hope that this bibliography will prove to be useful for anyone seeking information on animal health-related libraries and librarianship, whether he or she is a veterinary, agriculture, zoo, or primate librarian or student.

Created for indexing the AHLLL Bibliography by Suzanne Fricke

Winter 2011, Revised Summer 2012

Introduction

Because the criteria for inclusion in this collection are that a document be by, for, or about animal health librarians, many items are not necessarily about animal health librarianship. They may be just about pets, or just about librarianship, or something else entirely. This broad scope results in a unique and helpful collection, but it may not be readily apparent to all users why an item is included. The multidisciplinary nature and broad scope of the collection created the need for a thesaurus for indexers and users, most of whom are new or established animal health librarians.

While the field of library science is at the core of this thesaurus, it also covers agriculture, veterinary medicine, education, public health, and informatics. Terms were selected mainly by examination of the literature in the Animal Health Libraries, Librarians, and Librarianship Bibliography (literary warrant). The creator of the bibliography was consulted in the early stages. In addition, the Online Dictionary of Library and Information Science (ODLIS) and Library of Congress Subject Headings (Cataloger’s Desktop http://desktop.loc.gov) were used for library terminology. Veterinary, animal, and medicine related terms were compared with National Library of Medicine Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and the National Agricultural Library Thesaurus, along with its subset the Animal Use Alternatives Thesaurus. The Virtuelle Factbibliothek Veterinarmedizin subject headings were also consulted for an overview of veterinary medicine terminology. The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) Thesaurus was used as a resource for educational terms.

Overview

This thesaurus consists of two parts. The classified schedule is made up of terms used for indexing of documents (preferred terms or descriptors). These are arranged in a manner that shows the basic structure and subject matter of the thesaurus. A second component of the thesaurus, the alphabetical schedule, displays the preferred terms plus over nearly 350 lead-in, or non-preferred terms, users might start out looking for when indexing or retrieving documents. Currently there is no notation for the thesaurus, and the structure is flat, with few broader or narrower terms.

The thesaurus is in English, requiring that non-English items or their abstracts be indexed in English.

Classified Schedule

While repeat users will go straight to the alphabetical schedule, it behooves new users to examine the classified schedule first to understand how the added custom fields are structured. The classified schedule is a two level hierarchy and includes only preferred terms used for indexing. It is broken down into the attributes/fields of subject, document type, format, library type, animal type, geographic area, and institutional affiliation to reflect the added ways, in addition to standard bibliographic fields, that documents may be indexed and searched. Each is represented by a separate searchable field in the bibliographic database. In general, only terms relevant to the area of animal health librarianship are included, with the core subject being librarianship. For example, while ostriches and rhinos may be what a document is about, within the context of this collection the subject may be collection development. All documents have a type, and nearly all have a subject. Beyond that they may not be indexed for all fields. For instance, documents produced in the United States are not necessarily indexed as such. Those documents from geographic areas represented by fewer documents are indexed.

Subject

Most of the nearly 100 subject terms reflect areas central to librarianship. Many library terms have evolved over time, as pointed out in a 2012 MLA plenary presentation by Mark Funk, Cornell Medical Library. The collection attempts to collocate historical and modern terms for the same topic, for instance Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) with more modern terms like Alert Services and Awareness Services. Some subjects are areas of frequently asked questions for academic animal health librarians (Test Preparation) or areas of outreach (Veterinary Consumer Health). Other preferred terms reflect veterinary subject matter that is unique in regards to collection management (Pet Loss, Human Animal Bond, Animal Welfare and Alternatives) or requires a large degree of information management (Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Parasitology). Emerging terms such as One Health are also represented here. Some subjects collocate documents that define the profession (Librarians, Libraries, History). A few terms in the indexing subject list are not currently represented in the bibliography. They have been added in anticipation of their use (Copyright).

Animal type

Currently animals are organized by purpose in an effort to limit thesaurus size. Future expansion of the thesaurus may allow for animal species using common and scientific names if this fits user need. The CAB Thesaurus will be considered as a future source of species terms.

Document Content type

Some of the bibliography items are about document types and their organization, such as articles about preserving Conference Proceedings, while others are that Document Content Type, such as the conference proceedings themselves. Items about document content types list that document content type as a subject, not a document type.

Library Type

Animal Health Libraries are divided here by purpose.

Geographic Region

Many documents are about or originate from a given geographic region. Those documents from more highly represented geographic regions (United States, Canada,Western Europe) may not be indexed geographically unless they are about a given region. Some documents from more highly represented geographic regions are indexed by institutional affiliation.

Institutional Affiliation

This indexing category allows users to tie given authors and areas of expertise to an affiliated institution. The use of institution here refers to government agencies, zoos or wildlife parks, professional organizations, and academic institutions. A given author may have moved on from an institution after publishing. These will be indexed on a case by case basis, and users are always encouraged to search individual authors when that knowledge is available.

Alphabetical Schedule

The alphabetical schedule is an exhaustive list of nearly 450 terms that indexers or document seekers might look for when considering the subject of the document. It is designed to bring documents about the same subject together under the same indexing terms, even if terminology in different disciplines differs. For instance, an article that had been indexed in the PubMed database under Public Health, Veterinary Aspects and an article that was indexed in a veterinary publication under One Health would be collocated here under the preferred term of One Health. This document is a constant work in progress, and suggestions for additions are welcome. It is important to remember that documents in the bibliography can be indexed under more than one subject. For instance, some documents may fall under both Library Instruction and Information Literacy.

Preferred terms in the alphabetical schedule are shown in boldface type and non-preferred terms are in italics. An example of the preferred term Collection Development is given here followed by an explanation of all symbols that might be found in an entry:

Collection Development

UF       Acquisitions

Special Collections

RT       Digital Collection and Digitization

SR       ODLIS

DEF    The process of planning . . .

In most cases non-preferred terms will have only a USE symbol followed by the preferred term. In cases where more than one USE suggestion is found on separate lines they denote that more than one meaning for the term is possible. The appropriate suggestion should be selected based on the scope note. Scope notes, abbreviations, related terms, and definitions for lead in terms are included when they are considered beneficial to the thesaurus user, or to future revisers of the thesaurus. In some cases scope notes for non-preferred terms remind readers that subject indexing terms should be what the item is about, not what the item is.

This thesaurus is unique in that the alphabetical schedule includes terms for multiple indexing fields: subject, document content type, animal type, and library type. In the following example we see three different fields represented: Awareness Services is a controlled term in the Subject field, Avian is in the Animal Type field, and Aviary is a Library Type. A hyphenated preferred term means use the field designated in the second half of the hyphen. Lack of a hyphen means the preferred term is in the subject field:

Avian : Animal Type

UF       Bird

RT       Library Type: Aviary

Aviary : Library Type

UF       Birds

RT       Animal Type: Avian

Awareness Services

UF       Alert Services

            Current Awareness Services

            Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI)

In most cases indexing beyond the subject field goes without saying if that field is significant to the document, but on occasion suggestions for other fields may be made. Sometimes indexers may be specifically requested to index more than one field, for instance:

Fish and Fisheries

USE      Zoo Aquarium Wildlife

             Library Type: Aquarium

             Animal Type: Aquatic

In the above example the subject field would be indexed as Zoo Aquarium Wildlife, but it can be collocated with other sources on strictly fish through its library or animal type. Remember that there is a great deal of built in redundancy to cover the multiple ways that users may want to search. The alphabetical index does not include geographic area or institutional affiliation as those are thought to be self-explanatory.

Rules for the Thesaurus

The subject terms in this thesaurus should be considered complete concepts, or pre-coordinate terms. An effort was made to achieve convertibility, the ability to go from this indexing language to larger controlled vocabularies such as LCSH and MeSH. In some cases this ability was sacrificed in favor of terms that are more frequently used in the profession. There is a larger degree of pre-coordination in areas where a greater number of documents need to be indexed by the thesaurus. In other cases, topics with less representation in the bibliography have been combined with a topic that is similar, but not quit the same (these are referred to as quasi-synonyms). Abstracting is combined with Indexing in this manner. Both topics are included in the subject title to enable keyword searching.

Acronyms (mainly of library and veterinary organizations) are not preferred terms in the thesaurus, but they are included in the alphabetical index as lead-in or non-preferred terms to accommodate the user. Many of these organizations are important to the profession as originators of much of the indexed information, although they are infrequently the subject of that information.

National Information Standards Organization (NISO) thesaurus standards allow for hyphenated terms when they are demonstrating a relationship (such as Human-Animal Bond).

The format for terms in the classified schedule is natural language, meaning “as spoken.” As a result of this parenthetical qualifiers such as Education (Veterinary) are not included as preferred terms, though they are present as lead-in terms in the alphabetical schedule. Inverted (rotated) lead-in terms were included when the user might seek the inverted form for retrieval or indexing, such as Natural Disaster and the inverted Disaster, Natural.

Spelling variants have been included when literary warrant indicates they may cause confusion. For instance Grey Literature is the preferred term for Gray Literature.

This thesaurus is a work in progress. Suggestions from users are always welcome and appreciated!
